У статті розглянуто авторські трактування зарубіжних та вітчизняних науковців щодо визначення сутності поняття менеджменту. Узагальнено та систематизовано існуючі визначення дефініції «менеджмент». Встановлено, що основна проблема визначення поняття «менеджмент» полягає в тому, що його можна розглядати з різних точок зору: як явище, як процес, як систему, як галузь наукових знань, як мистецтво, як категорію людей, зайнятих управлінською працею, або як орган управління. За результатами проведеного дослідження визначено, що формалізація дефініції «менеджмент» має велике значення для розвитку понятійно-категоріального апарату економічної науки. Доведено, що менеджмент є невід’ємною частиною будь-якої спільної людської діяльності, що тією чи іншою мірою потребує організації. На основі наукових підходів зарубіжних та вітчизняних вчених уточнено та обґрунтовано поняття «менеджмент».

The article is devoted to a versatile study and critical analysis of the essence of the concept of «management» on the ground of modern developments of authors-scientists of the field of management. Emphasized on the current special importance of the research of the essence of management to ensure high efficiency of all management processes in general. The existing views of foreign and domestic scholars on the definition of «management» are summarized. The general traits and differences in the essence of the definition are investigated. Conducted аn analytical study of the essence of management from the standpoint of its historical origin, the conclusions of foreign and domestic scholars, the etymology of the origin of the term «management». It is noticed that despite the considerable amount of scientific and practical research of management available today, in many of them its essence is interpreted differently. It is established that the main problem of defining the concept of "management" is that it can be considered from different points of view: as a phenomenon, as a process, as a system, as a branch of scientific knowledge, as art, as a category of people engaged in management, or as governing body. According to the results of the conducted study, it is determined that the formalization of the definition of «management» is of great importance for the development of the conceptual and categorical apparatus of economic science. It has been proven that management is an integral part of any joint human activity, which to some extent needs the organization. It has been established that the most characteristic peculiar inaccuracy in the study of the content of management by domestic experts is consideration its without a relationship with a clearly defined essence and through the prism of economic processes, rather than purely human, as management actually needs. Based on the results of systematization of definitions and analysis of the basic concepts of management, appropriate generalizations were made, on the basis of which an updated definition of the essence of management was proposed.
