| Abstract: | In the long-continued (1972–2000) studies of butterflies carried out in the Rostov-on-Don vicinity, a total of 128 Rhopalocera species is reported for this region. Complemented by the studies of S. N. Alpheraky in 19th century near Taganrog and of B. Alberti in 1943, the entire list grows up to 143 species. The collecting sites include 50 localities in 21 districts of the region. Rhopalocerous fauna of the Rostov-on-Don region includes 7 rare butterflies recorded in the ‘Red Book of the USSR', 3 species from the ‘Red Book of Russian Federation', and 14 species from the ‘Red Data Book of European butterflies'. This is the first comprehensive regional list of Rhopalocera with all localities and dates of collecting. |
