Phylogenetic analysis of Ukrainian Bacillus anthracis strains

Abstract

Anthrax is a widely spread zoonotic disease which poses a serious threat to public and animal health. Sporadic cases of anthrax occur each year in Ukraine both among farm animals and humans. Cutaneous form of anthrax is the most widespread in Ukraine. The capability of Bacillus anthracis spores to remain viable in soil for decades, as well as the possibility to use this pathogen as biological terror agent make effective diagnostic and research capabilities extremely important. This comprises bio forensic capabilities including state-of-the-art methods for accurate genotyping of B. anthracis strains. Сибірка – це поширене зоонозне захворювання, яке становить серйозну загрозу для здоров'я людей та тварин. Щороку в Україні виникають спорадичні випадки сибірки як серед сільськогосподарських тварин, так і серед людей. Найпоширеніша форма сибірки в Україні – шкірна. Здатність спор Bacillus anthracis залишатися життєздатними протягом десятиліть у ґрунті, а також можливість використання цього збудника в якості агента біологічного тероризму робить ефективні діагностичні та дослідницькі можливості надзвичайно важливими. Передбачаються біоаналітичні можливості, включаючи надсучасні методи точного генотипування штамів B. anthracis.
